Keep in mind that the border closes at 6 pm and does not open until 9 the next morning. The formalities of stamps and others took us only a few minutes and we went to the small pier where the boats that cross the river that separates Thailand and Laos leave.

The journey leaves for 1K and lasts only 5 minutes. We disembarked in the Thai town of Chiang Khong, again to seal the passport and wait for the van that would take us to Chiang Mai to leave.

Normally almost no one stays overnight in Chiang Khong and crosses at an hour where you can join with some transport that leads to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or any other destination in Thailand. On the side of Laos -Huay Xai- they will also offer you the direct tickets to those destinations but it is cheaper to buy it once you are in Thailand.

To enter Thailand you do not need a visa for the majority but if you come in the opposite direction you will have to pay 35 USD to enter Laos with a 30-day visa.
