You arrive at your hotel, they put a bracelet on you and open the doors to heaven. A sky that is located in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and is usually composed of as many varied food, cocktails and tropical juices as you wish, all accompanied by paradisiacal beaches in which typical advertisement palms appear almost lying on the sand.
Punta Cana is the perfect place to rest in the Caribbean. In 1969 a group of American investors bought a large area of wild land and began to plant the seed of the great hotel development that can be observed today.
Millions of tourists visit Punta Cana - and especially, the mythical area of Playa Bavaro - every year and there are few who do not leave their hotel complex during the whole week. Beach, drink and food are worth it.
When I visited Punta Cana in 2010, I found it a sacrilege to do that, and we took advantage of our stay for several excursions in Punta Cana and surroundings.
Based on my experience these are The best excursions to do in Punta Cana:
1. Excursion to Isla Saona
After a couple of days lying on the beach, we wanted to get out of the monotony and see some of all the natural beauty that surrounds the beaches of Punta Cana and that's why we take one of the best excursions in Punta Cana: the one that would take us to Visit Isla Saona.
They picked us up at 7 in the morning at the hotel. We shared a van with 3 more travelers and after 2 hours of travel, including a 15-minute stop at a Dominican handicraft shop, we arrived at the jetty where the catamaran with which we would travel to Isla Saona was.
The catamaran part was one of the most fun of the trip. Dominican rum, lively music, dances and about 70 people delivered to an impromptu party on the deck. Thus, the 45 minutes that the trip lasted flew by.
Isla Saona appeared before us as an immaculate line of green palm trees that guarded a magnificent white sand beach. The waters were light blue, almost transparent, making them ideal for taking the glasses and diving a little. That is what I did before they called us to eat a fish of exquisite flavor and freshness.
I would have liked to explore the beach on the other side of the island - much less touristy - but we didn't have more time, since they took us to dive to an impressive place, called La Piscina.
When we returned to the jetty - again with rum and background dances - it was already evening. We were defeated, but happy to have enjoyed one of the best excursions to do in Punta Cana.Click on this link and book your catamaran excursion to Isla Saona
2. Excursion to Santo Domingo
One of the things I had proposed to my friends when organizing the trip to Punta Cana was to spend a day in Santo Domingo. The visit to the capital of the country is one of the best excursions to do in Punta Cana.
Although you can hire a private and guided tour, we choose to take a bus from the Bavaro Express company, which departed from the Punta Cana bus station and costs about 400 Dominican pesos. After almost 4 hours of travel, we arrived at our destination.
The boardwalk in Santo Domingo disenchanted us a little, but the same did not happen to us with its historic center. Santo Domingo was founded by Bartolomé Colón in 1498. The heritage legacy that is concentrated in these streets is exceptional, and that is why the historic center of Santo Domingo was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
The first cathedral and the first castle built by the Spaniards in the New World are here, but also monasteries, museums, convents, statues, forts, plazas (being the most emblematic of Spain and Columbus), the Alcazar de Colón… Santo Domingo is a historical jewel and one of the best excursions to do from Punta Cana.Click on this link and discover the colonial jewel of Santo Domingo
3. Excursion to Samana
