Condors in the Colca Canyon
I have made two trips of several weeks through the lands of the ancient Inca Empire. And I would go back many more. The amount of things to see in Peru It makes it one of those countries that you never get married to visit. On each trip you will know secrets that were overlooked in the previous ones.
Peru combines its natural beauty with unsurpassed historical and archaeological wealth in South America. It is the typical country that has something for each traveler and that is worth being traveled without any hurry, absorbing every apex of greatness and, in turn, simplicity that it has to offer. The power of the Pachamama (totemic goddess of the Incas represented by the planet Earth) is great in Peru.
If you only have a few weeks to tour the country, I leave you my subjective list of the best places to see in Peru.
1. Machu Picchu

You will not find any list of the best places to see in Peru that does not include Macchu Picchu. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful places to see in the world.
The ancient Inca city is surrounded by a halo of mystery, much more fictional than real. Its temples and sanctuaries and its sublime architecture suggest that it was one of the most advanced towns of the time. However, it is not true that Machu Picchu was "lost" at some point in its history.
The Spanish collected taxes from their citizens already in the first half of the 16th century. They knew of the existence of the citadel, but did not visit it frequently, perhaps due to its location: about 2,600 meters above sea level and between the mountains Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu.
After the confirmation of Spanish power in the area and the abandonment of the city, Machu Picchu fell into oblivion, but the surrounding lands continued to be used for cultivation for centuries.
