Why the trip?

First of all I introduce myself, my name is Javi, I am 22 years old, and I live in Madrid. After finishing college this summer, I was working for about six months so I managed to save to make a long trip.

I have always been very fond of this sport, to the point that it has marked part of my life. From the beginning in the mountains of Madrid, through years of competition, until I had completely abandoned it, and resumed again doing season in Andorra, it had always been a dream to ski where there are the best conditions for the practice of this sport; The north west coast.

It took time behind a new experience and this would be an opportunity to spend A time away from home, live alone, and face reaching a new country without knowing anyone.

Why Lake Tahoe?

The North American west coast is large, very large. More than 3,000 km. of mountain ranges and mountains they cross it, arriving in Canada, and if we continue further, to Alaska.

Therefore we have many options when planning a trip like this; the Rockies, Sierra Nevada, British Columbia, among other places.

Lake Tahoe is a lake 30 kilometers long by about 10 wide, located about 300 km northeast of San Francisco, and only half an hour from Reno.

The mountainous system where it is integrated is called Sierra Nevada, and is composed of mountains of low average altitude (between 1500 and 3000 meters)

The stations are set around the lake and we have 13 to choose from. So far there is not much to note that they do not have the Pyrenees, or the Alps. However the two most important reasons for the choice of place were:

  • Snow: In Lake Tahoe they have an average snow accumulation of around 12 meters per year. (A good season in the Pyrenees can be about 5 or 6).
  • Money: It is probably the cheapest place to do an axial season in North America. (but beware, not to go 15 days !!)

The Travel Approach

The travel plan from the beginning was focused on skiing. Rent a house, buy a car, a seasonal pass, and ski practically every day. For outsiders, it may seem odd to want to ski almost every day for three months. However, this for a theme lover, is a dream come true. The pleasure of skiing during the week, when there is no one at the stations. Not being in a hurry to improve, because there are so many days that one can go at the pace you want. Know the stations thoroughly, until it looks like a local. The pleasure of not missing a snowfall, due to the fact that it falls on Wednesday. This was the vision.

The first step is to buy the plane ticket. I flew from Madrid to San Francisco. In the US you cannot enter as a tourist if it is not with a return ticket, so if you do not want to be sent home without having stepped on more than the destination airport, it is convenient to take the closed return ticket. In my case, some friends of a friend carried the same destination, so I took the opportunity to try to share expenses with them, find a house and a car.

I went with nothing prepared, just the ticket and money, and for those who have doubts, about whether to go with things tied or untied, I clarify them; go with the post.
